Emergency Departments Open New Doors to Technology, Patient Service

Article Abstract:

Many hospital emergency departments are re-designing their department to focus more on providing services to patients. Giving patients the best care with minimal waiting times could lead to high levels of patient satisfaction. Many patients are also concerned about privacy, so some departments have put walls between all treatment bays with a curtain only in front. Some department directors admit that these changes are partly a marketing ploy to attract more patients to their hospital. In other cases, they are simply concerned about providing the best care to their patients.

Lung volume reduction surgery puts a new twist on an old technique

Article Abstract:

A clinical trial of lung volume reduction surgery that will begin in the summer of 1997 should answer many of the questions physicians have about this treatment. It involves surgically removing diseased parts of the lung in emphysema patients. There have been anecdotal reports of its effects, but mortality rates have been as high as 26%. Medicare stopped paying for the operation in 1996 until a controlled trial demonstrates its effectiveness. Long-term observational studies have shown that the benefits may only last a few years.
