Encouraging young women to exercise: can teenage magazines play a role?

Article Abstract:

Group discussions were held with 14 and 15 year-old schoolgirls to assess how magazines portrayed exercise and the girls' attitudes to physical exercise. Magazines-content analysis was carried out and interviews were held with members of the Sports Council and staff from the magazines. Few of the girls did regular exercise and few of the magazines promoted it as a means of good health. However, the girls and the magazine staff would not mind more emphasis being made in the magazines. Health educators could actively encourage this to happen.

Encouraging no-smoking policies in restaurants and cafes in Cornwall

Article Abstract:

Recent research has assessed the effectiveness of a scheme established in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly to promote the provision of facilities for non-smokers in cafes and restaurants. It was found that the scheme, based on making awards to these establishments, did not have a direct impact on no-smoking policies. However, it did serve to raise awareness of this issue among restaurant and cafe managers and customers.
