Enhanced Surveillance for Pregnancy-Associated Mortality--Maryland, 1993-1998

Article Abstract:

Homicide is the leading cause of death among pregnant women and new mothers in Maryland, followed closely by cardiovascular diseases. This was the conclusion of researchers who analyzed death certificate data of reproductive-age women, live birth and fetal death records, and medical examiner records in Maryland between 1993 and 1998.

Examining Homicide's Contribution to Pregnancy-Associated Deaths

Article Abstract:

Several studies have shown that about one-fourth of all deaths among pregnant women or new mothers are caused by homicide. This makes homicide the leading cause of death in these women. Among non-pregnant women, homicide is the second leading cause of death among young women and the sixth leading cause of death in middle-aged women.
