Coinfection with HIV-1 and human T-cell lymphotropic virus type II in intravenous drug users is associated with delayed progression to AIDS

Article Abstract:

Various AIDS-related virologic, clinical and immunologic parameters are analyzed to study the relation between AIDS and its coinfection with HIV-1 and human T-cell lymphotropic virus (HTLV) types I and II. The results show that the antiretroviral treatment is only successful in controlling HIV-I infection among the patients as HIV-I and HTLV-II elucidates cell counts for a longer period of time.

Virostatics: A new frontier in the treatment of HIV/AIDS

Article Abstract:

The generalized qualitative impairment of lymphocyte function observed during HIV disease progression is discussed and the need for improving highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) is emphasized. To slow immune pathology, more consideration should be given to the reconstitution of the immune system by increasing the number of restoring or improving biological function of T-cell subsets.
