Epidemiology of Measles--United States, 1998

Article Abstract:

Vaccinating all schoolchildren with two doses of measles vaccine will prevent a resurgence of measles in the US. During 1998, there were only 100 confirmed cases of measles in the US. This is 28% fewer cases than were reported in 1997. Most of the 100 cases occurred in people visiting the US from another country. This indicates that measles has been eradicated in the US. However, in the 1998-99 school year, only 55% of US students were required by their states to receive two doses of measles vaccine. Greater vaccination coverage will ensure that imported cases of measles will not spread.

Impact of a clinical guidelines program for breast and colon cancer in a French cancer center

Article Abstract:

Clinical guidelines can change medical practice substantially. These guidelines contain the recommended treatment for specific diseases based on a consensus of physicians. A group of physicians at a French cancer center analyzed 350 medical decisions made in the treatment of 100 women with breast cancer and 158 patients with colon cancer after clinical guidelines were introduced in 1993. The rate of compliance with the breast cancer guidelines jumped from 19% in 1993 to 54% in 1995. The compliance rate for colorectal cancer guidelines rose from 50% in 1993 to 70% in 1995.
