HIV Prevalence in Patients With Syphilis, United States

Article Abstract:

People with syphilis have a high risk of contracting HIV infection. A review of 30 studies showed that about 16% of all syphilis patients are also infected with HIV. Twenty-seven percent of men with syphilis are HIV-positive and 12% of women with syphilis are HIV-positive. These figures were much higher in gay men and intravenous drug users. Sixty to ninety percent of gay men with syphilis are HIV-infected and 22% to 71% of intravenous drug users with syphilis are HIV-positive.

Syphilis in Atlanta During an Era of Declining Incidence

Article Abstract:

Jails and drug treatment centers should provide more information about preventing sexually transmitted diseases (STD). In a study of 25 patients visiting an STD clinic and 49 healthy volunteers, the STD patients were more likely to have HIV infection, a sexual partner who used crack, and a history of incarceration. Only 40% of those who had been incarcerated received STD preventive advice at that time. Of those who received drug treatment, 74% had received STD preventive advice at that time.
