Factors Associated With Condom Use for Oral Sex Among Female Brothel-Based Sex Workers in Singapore

Article Abstract:

Prostitutes should be encouraged to use condoms when performing oral sex. In 1997, 81% of female prostitutes in Singapore engaged in oral sex, compared to only 27% in 1992. Consequently, the number of prostitutes with oral gonorrhea increased also. In a survey of 225 prostitutes with a history of oral sex, only 57% used a condom while performing oral sex, whereas 97% used a condom during vaginal sex.

A Prospective Study on Condom Slippage and Breakage Among Female Brothel-Based Sex Workers in Singapore

Article Abstract:

The rate of condom breakage and slippage is very low and all prostitutes should be encouraged to use them. In a study of 1,885 episodes of condom use by 219 female prostitutes, the rate of condom breakage and slippage was 1.2% and 2.1%, respectively. Duration of prostitution and spontaneity of clients to use condoms were associated with condom breakage and slippage.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Condom Use Among Female Freelance and Brothel-Based Sex Workers in Singapore

Article Abstract:

An educational campaign is needed in Singapore to reach freelance prostitutes. Researchers tested 111 freelance prostitutes and 333 prostitutes who worked in brothels for any sexually transmitted disease (STD). Thirty-five percent of the freelance prostitutes had at least one STD, compared to 24% of the brothel-based prostitutes. Freelance prostitutes were less likely to use condoms consistently than brothel-based prostitutes.
