Ethical Considerations in the Public Policy Laboratory

Article Abstract:

Research on welfare reform and other public policies must conform to the same high standards as other types of research. The federal government has allowed many states to deny welfare benefits to their residents to meet certain public health objectives. One example is the state of Georgia, which in 1993 threatened to withhold AFDC benefits to parents who did not have their children vaccinated. This economic sanction falls on poor residents and may make them even poorer. Researchers who analyzed the effect of this policy were not required to have the study scrutinized by an ethics committee.

Alcohol advertising in magazines and adolescent readership

Article Abstract:

The more teenage readers a magazine has, the more likely it is to contain ads for beer and distilled liquor, according to a survey of 35 US magazines that are read by teenagers. This is despite the fact that the three major alcoholic beverage trade associations have pledged not to advertise their products to teenagers. In this survey, only the wine industry kept that pledge.

Fatherhood as a component of men's health

Article Abstract:

The physical and mental health effects of being a father are examined along with the effect of multiple structural variations of fatherhood on men's health. The psychological fabric of men's lives would reveal critical links between fatherhood and men's health, while sociocultural changes are also found to affect men's roles as fathers.
