Ethical and human-rights issues in research on mental disorders that may affect decision-making capacity

Article Abstract:

A member of the National Bioethics Advisory Commission recommends that the federal government adopt the commission's recommendations as soon as possible. The recommendations cover the treatment mentally ill patients who are participating in a research study. Some research groups have been cited for violations of informed consent. It may be difficult to obtain informed consent if the patient does not understand the concept. The commission recommends that an independent qualified professional assess the patient's ability to understand the consent process.
