Ethnobotanical tattoing of the gingiva: literature review and report of a case

Article Abstract:

A 54-year-old Ethiopian woman had undergone tattooing of the maxillary gingiva as treatment for an oral disease. The gingiva was pierced with a needle coated with a mixture of Datura stramonium resin and lantern soot. The treatment provided no reduction in the pain, but blue pigmentation of the maxillary gingiva, generalized mild periodontitis and carious lesions were observed.
