Etiology and outcome of extremely low-birth weight infants

Article Abstract:

Extremely low-birth-weight infants may have similar near term outcomes after preterm birth, regardless of the reason for the prematurity. Researchers analyzed 111 preterm infants weighing 500 to 800 grams and their mothers according to four main reasons for prematurity. Infants born early because of preeclampsia or intrauterine growth restriction fared no better immediately after birth than did infants born because of preterm labor, premature rupture of membranes, or multifetal pregnancy. There was no difference in survival or neonatal death according to cause for preterm birth.

Human fetal membranse release a Ca++ channel inhibitor

Article Abstract:

There seems to be a calcium substance released from the chorion and decidua, membranes which surround the fetus, which inhibits contractions of the muscles around the uterus. For labor to be successful, uterine contractions must be coordinated and regular. The myometrium, which is the muscular layer, has voltage-dependent calcium channels which respond to the release from the chorion/decidua and regulate the birth process.

Abnormality of calcium channel inhibitor released from fetal membranes in preterm labor

Article Abstract:

Fetal membranes produce a natural calcium channel inhibitor that prevents the uterus from contracting prematurely. A study of pregnant women in premature labor shows that the amount of the inhibitor begins to drop sooner than normal in premature labor.
