Euthanasia, assisted suicide and AIDS: issues for nurses

Article Abstract:

People with AIDS are choosing to commit suicide rather than live with the symptoms of their disease. Whether legislation should be changed to allow euthanasia or assisted suicide is a contentious issue. In Amsterdam, which has such legislation, 26% of AIDS-related deaths are the result of euthanasia or assisted suicide. In countries without legislation assisted suicide can be distressing. Nurses are closely involved with these issues. More discussion is needed to ensure that nurses can continue to do the best for their patients.

UK nurses condemn Chinese orphanages

Article Abstract:

Great concern has been voiced by nurses in the UK about the conditions in Chinese orphanages, which were detailed in a recent television documentary and in a report from Human Rights Watch. They are disturbed by the fact that orphanage workers, who are almost certainly untrained, are known as 'nurses' and 'medical staff.' Unison has called on nursing organisations to exert pressure for change.
