Euthanasia down under; first deaths under new Australian law heighten controversy over measure

Article Abstract:

The Australian Medical Association and concerned parties are making public their displeasure with Australia's Northern Territory's 1996 "The Rights of the Terminally Ill Act," the world's first voluntary euthanasia legislation. The legislation stipulates that patients inclined to end their lives must be suffering from a terminal illness, free of depression and beyond the reach of further medical treatment. Patients must also receive approval from three doctors prior to the process. As of March 1997, three people have taken their life via the voluntary euthanasia procedures.

Europe looking at ethics of euthanasia, transplants

Article Abstract:

The European Parliament will consider two proposals that would legalize euthanasia and liberalize rules for organ transplantation. The first proposal is likely to be rejected, but the second stands a good chance of being accepted. It would ban organ trading and designate organ recipients solely by medical need. The only controversial provision in the proposal is a clause allowing physicians to expropriate organs from deceased patients who fail to give their explicit consent while still alive.
