Experts fear 'get-tough' view of drug treatment may backfire

Article Abstract:

Physicians are concerned that cuts in addiction treatment funding and services will backfire and cause more problems for society. The medical community believes that substance abuse treatment programs are the key to rehabilitation while the American public views such treatment programs as a waste of federal and state monies. The California Drug and Alcohol Treatment Assessment indicates that publically funded addiction programs saved Californians $1.5 bil in 1992.

Help comes in many forms, from many different people

Article Abstract:

Physicians can learn from listening to their patients and other people. A doctor tells how he learned from an old pharmacist about removing objects from a patient's eye. He also learned how to handle patients with different personalities using techniques learned from a patient who was a flight attendant. In addition, he discovered how listening to nurses can help solve mysterious problems.

Life's lessons for physician are behind a patient's smile

Article Abstract:

A physician was prompted to ask for the life history of an elderly patient whose self-deprecating smile minimized his rapid recovery after an illness. He revealed early hardships during which he cared for a younger brother until they were rescued. Similarly, many older patients maintain excellent health and spirit after overcoming seemingly insurmountable difficulties.
