Activation of a tissue-specific stress response in the aqueous outflow pathway of the eye defines the glaucoma disease phenotype

Article Abstract:

Issues related to the finding that endothelial leukocyte adhesion molecule-1 (ELAM-1) is a marker for the vasculature atherosclerotic plaque related to glaucoma are examined. Topics include the presence of ELAM-1 on trabecular meshwork (TM) cells, the nature of ELAM-1 expression, and the role of interleukin -1 in the aqueous outflow.

Ultrahigh-resolution ophthalmic optical coherence tomography

Article Abstract:

This article discusses an innovative technology for optical coherence tomography that allows for non-invasive in vivo, ultrahigh-resolution imaging of corneal and retinal morphology. The use of this technology to visualize retinal pathology is addressed.

Extracellular carbonic anhydrase mediates hemorrhagic retinal and cerebral vascular permeability through prekallikrein activation

Article Abstract:

Mass spectroscopy-based proteomics is used to detect 117 proteins in human vitreous and elevated levels of extracellular carbonic anhydrase-I (CA-I) in vitreous from individuals with diabetic retinopathy. The inhibition of extracellular CA-I and kallikrein-mediated innate inflammation might provide new therapeutic opportunities for treating the hemorrhage-induced retinal and cerebral edema.
