Extraosseous calcifying odontogenic cyst: report of case and review of literature

Article Abstract:

A forty-year-old woman was referred by her general dentist for the evaluation of a growth in her gums. Six months previously a similar growth had been treated with electrosurgery; now that the lesion had returned she was referred for periodontal evaluation and biopsy. Her dental history was unremarkable. Histological examination revealed that there were small, scattered areas of calcification; the tissue was apparently a calcifying odontogenic cyst. A review of the literature on such cysts showed that they occur at equal rates in the upper and lower jaw, and that there are two peaks of occurrence, in the second and sixth decades of life. Calcifying odontogenic cysts have a tendency to occur in the anterior (front) portion of the mouth. Although the cysts may recur, there has been no description of an extraosseous cyst becoming cancerous. Therefore conservative surgical excision is the appropriate treatment for the extraosseous calcifying odontogenic cyst. (Consumer Summary produced by Reliance Medical Information, Inc.)
