FDA panel seeks to balance risks in warnings for antidepressants

Article Abstract:

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory committee has recommended that newer generation antidepressants should carry a warning of an increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in not only children and adolescents, but also in young adults. The FDA and its advisors are trying to balance the risks and benefits of antidepressant treatments on labels, whereas the physicians are trying to determine how to manage these risks and benefits in their practice.

Drugs alias dietary supplements

Article Abstract:

Herbal supplements should be regulated just as drugs are in order to protect consumers from their adverse effects. A study published in 2003 found that St. John's wort can affect the metabolism of half of all drugs on the market. Another study found that many web sites that sell herbal products make health claims that violate the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act.
