Face to face

Article Abstract:

Bradford Royal Infirmary Deaf Nursing Auxiliary Adrian Peacock is very pleased with the level of support he receives on the ward. He admits he does not want to train to be a nurse. He points out he uses the patients' facial expressions to find out what they want although he is able to lip read. Staff Nurse Jenny Westerman suggests Adrian would be a very good nurse and she hopes he may be able to train one day. She points out he is very popular with the patients and he prefers to be treated the same way as the other auxiliaries. They both work on a cancer care ward.

The golden girls

Article Abstract:

The Fonthill home for Retired Nurses in Reigate, England, has 13 residents, the youngest of whom is 69. Most of the residents were nurses during the second world war, and had to work in very difficult conditions. Most of them can remember what it was like before the National Health Service began operating, when there were many cases of polio and tuberculosis and fever hospitals and sanatoria were still operating. The home can take up to 30 residents, so is seeking to attract more retired nurses.
