Article Abstract:

Senior Doctor Jo Judge has been married to Senior Charge Nurse Peter Judge since July 1996. They both work in the accident and emergency department at the Royal Liverpool Childrens Hospital, Liverpool, England. They describe how their relationship grew, over a period of 18 months, whilst they worked together in the department. Jo suffers from the non-curable disease lupus. She found some of the nursing staff initially had difficulty in accepting her relationship with Peter. Peter now works part-time in order to look after Jo's three children.

Face to face

Article Abstract:

Training to be a nurse was challenging, according to Gavin Smith, who trained with his wife Geraldine when they were both made redundant from a rubber factory in 1992. They had very little money, and they found it difficult to combine their family life with studying. His wife has found that training to be a nurse has greatly boosted her self-confidence. She has no particular desire for rapid career progression, but her husband would like to go into community nursing or occupational health.
