Faith healing

Article Abstract:

A woman with squamous cell carcinoma developed a large, fungating wound because her religious beliefs led her not to seek any treatment for her tumour for four years. The treatment, which she did eventually seek, included a blood transfusion to correct severe anaemia and palliative radiotherapy. The wound healed slowly. Nurses used a range of preparations and dressings to aid the healing process and doctors prescribed morphine at varying levels during the recovery period to control pain. Carers consider the patient received holistic care restoring a balance of body, mind and spirit.

Dog saliva complicates the healing of ulcers

Article Abstract:

The case of a patient with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cor pulmonale who developed Pasteurella multocida septicaemia after his leg ulcers were licked by his dog highlights the danger of P. multocida being transmitted to humans. Bacteraemia is found most commonly in patients with underlying chronic disease, with mortality being as high as 31%, either from the disease or septicaemia. It is clear that patients need to be made aware of the importance of keeping pets away from open wounds and ulcers.
