Family resemblance in fat intake in the Netherlands

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to determine the similarity in the fat intake of Dutch nuclear families with children aged 1-30 years old. Food consumption and nutrient intake were measured by a two-day dietary record which was part of a survey during 1987 and 1992. Results show that there is a resemblance in the short term intake of fats and fatty acids within the Dutch families. These similarities may be due to several factors such as cohabitational effect, family members influencing each other on eating behaviors, shared food preferences, and genetic factors.

The ability to compensate at lunch did not differ amongst the three age groups. Children, young adults and the elderly ate much less after a high-fat and high-carbohydrate yoghurt, compared to the no-preload condition.
