Nurses around the world are responding to new health needs in health care facilities, communities, homes, schools, the workplace and in the streets. They have expanded their services to include the poor, refugees, substance abusers, the aged, HIV-infected individuals and women.

The home nurse is an important figure in Denmark's policy toward its elderly citizens. The country's policy aims to 'let the elderly live as long as possible in their own environment,' which is more cost effective for the community.
