Fighting shy

Article Abstract:

The issue of assaults on nursing staff in accident and emergency (A&E) departments is gaining attention in the UK. Many campaigners are hoping for prosecution of offenders by hospital trusts. They seek actions to match the supportive words of the new Labour government, but the only result to date has been the promise of voluntary guidelines for hospital trusts. The guidelines will include advice on legal action. A survey, conducted by a nursing journal and a television programme, revealed that 96% of A&E nurses have been verbally abused, and 46% have been physically abused.

Article Abstract:

The National Health Service (NHS) union, Unison, is to begin negotiations with health service employers about introducing more flexible job descriptions. The union has opposed this in the past but is willing to compromise if it will provide union members with better job security. Both the union and employers realise that changes have to be made if the health service trusts are to continue to get contracts. Funding has already been pledged to the seven NHS trusts which have agreed to negotiate.
