Finding the best solution

Article Abstract:

A survey has investigated bladder wash-out solutions for removing encrustation of urethral catheters. Solutions of distilled water, sodium chloride, Suby G, chlorhexidine, mandelic acid and Solution R were tested. Artificial urine was used to create encrustation. Encrusted catheters were soaked in solutions at 37 degrees centigrade for 15 minutes. Distilled water, sodium chloride and chlorhexidine did not dissolve the encrustation although some was washed off. Solution R was most effective.

Taking charge

Article Abstract:

A nurse practitioner with the Weston Area Health NHS Trust, UK, includes the performance of suprapubic catheterization in her role. The nurse began performing this procedure, which has been the authority's preferred method of catheterization since 1980, in the mid-1990s. This expansion of the nursing role has improved standards of patient care as junior doctors previously performing the task were often inexperienced. The nurse also educates other nurses in catheter replacement.
