Finnish national register of laparoscopic hysterectomies: a review and complications of 1165 operations

Article Abstract:

Shorter hospital stays and recovery periods may follow laparoscopic hysterectomy but surgeons may need thorough training to avoid injuring the urinary tract. Laparoscopy involves passing a laparoscope through a small incision in the abdomen. A large study in Finland of women undergoing hysterectomy compared the outcomes of women undergoing the new technique of laparoscopic hysterectomy to outcomes of women who had vaginal or abdominal hysterectomies. Hospital stays were three to four days shorter and recovery periods were two to three weeks shorter after laparoscopic hysterectomy. Urinary tract and bowel injuries were higher, however.

Increased risk of thyroid cancer among women with hysterectomies

Article Abstract:

Women who have a hysterectomy have an increased risk of developing thyroid cancer within two years, according to a study of 17,900 women. This was true even if the ovaries were not removed in addition to the uterus. Two years after the hysterectomy, the risk for thyroid cancer decreases.

Long-term outcome of nonconservative surgery (hysterectomy) for endometriosis-associated pain in women less than 30 years old

Article Abstract:

Young women may have a poor outcome from a hysterectomy for endometriosis compared to women over the age of 40. Endometriosis occurs when blood from the uterus backs up through the Fallopian tubes and enters the abdominal cavity.
