Working against the odds

Article Abstract:

The nursing profession can trace its traditions back to the 19th century and the workhouses of the time. While Florence Nightingale is well-known for her pioneering work, most of the nursing at the time was undertaken in workhouses, established in 1834 and designed to house the poor and dispossessed. Pauper, or Poor Law, nurses tended up to 50,000 sick patients in surroundings of poverty and deprivation. Over time, the Poor Law nurses established systems of ethics that moved their profession away from the stigma of the workhouse.

Fire up

Article Abstract:

The nursing profession has a long history of radical protesting, especially during the 1970s when nurses were involved in protests about hospital closures and pay. Nurses campaigned for better working conditions and career structures, and in 1988 rose up in protest against the policies of the Conservative government. However, as the power of trades unions diminished in the early 1990s, nursing unions became less militant and concerned themselves with local issues. It remains to be seen if unions can again influence policy making.

Care out of chaos

Article Abstract:

The use of primary nursing management techniques would be invaluable on an acute mental health ward and would bring a much needed structure and direction to nursing mentally ill patients. The primary nursing structure involves support from management, planning patient care and teamwork, all of which are often missing from acute mental nursing policy. The system requires clear strategies for communication and monitoring which demand input from all levels of the nursing profession.
