Food fears

Article Abstract:

Nurses, food handlers and people caring for vulnerable sections of the population should be aware of good practice concerning food hygiene. The outbreak of E.coli 0157:H7 infection in Scotland focused attention on this subject. Many strains of escherichia coli bacteria are innocuous but this strain can cause serious problems in the very young and the elderly. The 20 people who died during this widespread outbreak were aged between 69 and 93. Nurses and other groups involved in the care of the elderly should follow good handwashing procedures to minimize cross-contamination risks.

Is the repeated weighing of pregnant women necessary?

Article Abstract:

Doubts have been raised about the effectiveness of routinely weighing pregnant women as part of their antenatal check ups. Although 95% of healthcare professionals do weigh women, the reasons for the procedure appear insubstantial. While some women may benefit from this practice, most do not. Rather than imposing the same procedures on all women, healthcare staff should adopt a more individual approach tailored to the needs of each woman. However, women who do have a weight problem are more at risk and need to be identified. A sidebar article gives details of key points.
