A chance for community nurse to shape the health agenda

Article Abstract:

Community nurses are not reputed to have a high morale, but they can make changes in their working patterns and work to influence the health service both nationally and locally. Possible reasons for having a low morale are stress, pressure of work and job insecurity. Some nurses are becoming tired of constant changes and shortage of funds. A lot of community nurses might want general practitioners to do the fighting for them, but doctors too are suffering low morale and feel professionally intimidated. Community nurses must fight their own cause.

Changing with the times

Article Abstract:

A health visiting service was established in east London, England, in 1907 as a result of concerns over the high infant mortality rate. The child death rate halved in Ilford, London, during 1910-1912 following the appointment of the first health visitor in the area. Health visitors primarily provided information and focused on hygiene awareness, such as teaching mothers to clean feeding equipment. Health visitors have adapted to the changing requirements of families over the years, according to some retired health visitors.

When sound housing advice leads to better health

Article Abstract:

Tower Hamlets is a borough of London that suffers from high unemployment, overcrowding and social problems. Housing tenants in the area have special housing problems that have remained unanswered by the local authority. Health visitors working in the area realised that they were not solving their clients housing problems using conventional methods and decided to establish a health and housing seminar from which developed a housing clinic, where clients were able to receive advice from a team of housing solicitors.
