Fostering integration: learning disabilities

Article Abstract:

Recent NHS reforms have helped to develop personal social networks in the health care arena which is particularly relevant to people with learning disabilities. Service providers aim to foster community participation and there has been a significant increase in residential provision in the community for people with learning disabilities. Tailor-made for the job

Article Abstract:

UK Department of Health guidance in 1992 suggests that general nursing services can satisfy most needs of people with learning disabiliites. However, optimum care necessitates specialist nursing. Sufficient resources should be available to provide adequate specialist care. Maintaining specialist services will ensure progressive development of care models. Experience and knowledge may be lost by diluting the service in general nursing.
