Fracture prevention with vitamin D supplementation: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trails

Article Abstract:

An estimation of the effectiveness of vitamin D supplementation in preventing hip and nonvertebral fractures in older persons is presented. It was concluded that oral vitamin D supplementation between 700 to 800 IU/d appears to reduce the risk of hip and any nonvertebral fractures in ambulatory or institutionalized elderly persons.

Sun exposure, sun protection, and Vitamin D

Article Abstract:

The patients are concerned that practicing sun protection may decrease intake of vitamin D, the benefits of which include improved bone and muscle health and fracture prevention. Extended sun exposure, however, provides no additional benefit but does increase the likelihood of photo-related damage, skin cancer, and eye damage.
