Fractured image

Article Abstract:

Osteoporosis, which affects more than 2 million people in the UK, is still mistakenly thought of as an elderly women's disease that is not worth treating. Only a quarter of the people suffering from osteoporosis in the UK receive treatment. People who have to take corticosteroids in high doses or for a prolonged period are at risk of osteoporosis, as are people with anorexia, cancer or an overactive thyroid. Calcitonin is one of a number of treatments available to relieve pain and halt or replace bone loss. Nasal sprays containing calcitonin, which currently has to be administered by injection, are being developed.

Use it or lose it

Article Abstract:

The UK's National Continence Day for 1997 will focus on the importance of pelvic floor exercises for the prevention of stress incontinence. This condition affects up to one in four women and one in nine men. A team coordinated in a Disabled Living project, Continence 2001, has devised a campaign aimed at exercise instructors and their clients. The team has organised study days and produced training videos. The campaign aims to get the exercise message across, but also to overcome the embarrassment of incontinence sufferers, so that they seek help for their problems.

Mental health therapies

Article Abstract:

Nurses interested in mental health therapies have a vast public need open them, and a range of training opportunities. Around a quarter of the UK population will suffer some form of mental illness at some point in their lives. These people, and their families, will need support, and this often occurs in the community. Therapies which have nurses have found useful include cognitive behavioural therapy, family therapy and solution-focused therapy. Diploma courses for nurses interested in psychotherapy include those at Manchester University and Maudsley Hospital.
