Fractured service

Article Abstract:

The Audit Commission has published a report which exposes the failings in the service given to hip fracture patients within the NHS. Holistic care must be reviewed individually, so that socio-economic factors can be taken into consideration when planning a patient's treatment. The report conclusion includes the following: more staff with relevant skills should be utilised; defined areas of responsibility should be allocated; patients should never have to wait more than one hour; management objectives and methods should be investigated.

Drama in the theatre

Article Abstract:

The recent case of theatre sister Valerie Tomlinson, currently suspended for removing a man's appendix under the direction of surgeon Tahir Bhatti, has highlighted the expanded role of the nurses. 'The Code of Professional Conduct' and 'The Scope of Professional Practice' currently prohibit nurses from doing anything which may place a patient at risk or at which they are incompetent, however, it is expected that nurses will take a greater role in the operating theatre in the future.

Maddening inaction

Article Abstract:

There is still considerable controversy over the issue of whether eating meat infected with BSE, or mad cows' disease, can cause Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) in humans. It is widely acknowledged that BSE is caused by an infectious agent, but there is even disagreement among experts about what sort of agent causes spongiform encephalopathies. There are now a number of brain specialists who believe that consuming food containing beef offal can lead to humans contracting CJD.
