Free radicals in ischemic and reperfusion myocardial injury: is this the time for clinical trials?

Article Abstract:

During a myocardial infarction (heart attack) the blood supply to a section of the heart is blocked and tissue death results because cells of the heart muscle do not get enough oxygen. Animal studies of infarcted cells, particularly after reperfusion (restoring blood flow) in the laboratory, have identified the production of free radicals, molecules which tend to react with other chemicals. Free radicals have been implicated in other biological systems such as aging and cancer development. Some therapeutic approaches have been suggested to stop free radicals from exerting their negative effects. Agents called free radical scavengers interfere with free radical production at different points in the pathway. Agents scavenge free radicals from either inside or outside the cell. More research is needed before experimental data can be extrapolated to humans. (Consumer Summary produced by Reliance Medical Information, Inc.)

Clonidine may reduce perioperative cardiac morbidity and mortality

Article Abstract:

Clonidine is used as a sedative, anxiolygic, analgesic and it reduces hypertension, tachycardia and norepinephrine release associated with surgical stress. Larger and well done trials are needed to assess the use of clonidine as a strategy to reduce perioperative cardiac risk.

Unrecognized heart attacks in women with known coronary artery disease

Article Abstract:

An unrecognized heart attack is very rare in women with coronary artery disease (CAD). In a study of 2,763 postmenopausal women with CAD, 256 were found to have had a heart attack using electrocardiography but only 11 never had any symptoms.
