Symptomatic hyponatremia during treatment of dehydrating diarrheal disease with reduced osmolarity oral rehydration solution

Article Abstract:

The rates of symptomatic hyponatremia were measured during treatment of patients with diarrhea with reduced osmolarity oral rehydration solution (ORS), as recommended by the World Health Organization on changing the formulation of the ORS in use to one with a reduced osmolarity. It was found that the risk of symptoms associated with hyponatremia in patients treated with the reduced osmolarity ORS was minimal and did not increase with the change in formulation.

Vasopressin receptor antagonists: will the "vaptans" fulfill their promise?

Article Abstract:

The antidiuretic hormone arginine vasopressin (AVP) is a powerful vasoconstrictor that modulates free water transport in the kidney and has an important role in the normal regulation of cardiovascular physiology. The increasing concentrations of plasma AVP within the physiologically relevant range can cause vasoconstriction in patients with advanced heart failure.
