From the wings of night: dream work with people who have acquired immunodeficiency syndrome

Article Abstract:

The AIDS Dreamwork Project has helped HIV-infected patients cope with the issues surrounding their illness by helping them interpret their dreams. Major recurring themes are dreams that: alert the dreamer to unaddressed issues; reassure that life is unfolding according to plan; play out internal or external conflict; portray the dreamer's psychic integration and resolution of issues; contain images of birth, death, rebirth, or transformation; contain archetypal or spiritual motifs. Guidelines are given for working with dreams.

Sleep dreams of women in the childbearing years: a review of research

Article Abstract:

Pregnancy appears to have important effects on dreaming. Studies analyzing dream content in pregnant women consistently find that dreams center on anxieties around childbirth and the child's well-being and concerns about becoming a mother. One study concluded that strongly negative emotions in dreams were associated with threatened abortion and premature labor. Another found that women who had more anxious dreams had shorter labors, suggesting that women may have resolved their issues through dreaming.

Sleep in pregnancy

Article Abstract:

Both the physical and mental restorative effects of sleep appear to be protected in pregnancy. Physical restoration occurs during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep and mental restoration during REM sleep. While sleep disturbance is common during the third trimester, the problem is falling asleep. Once asleep, NREM and REM patterns proceed normally, although there is some evidence suggesting a decrease in NREM sleep. However, because pregnant women sleep more, the net effect is the same.
