Funding a School-Based Health Center

Article Abstract:

School-based health centers (SBHCs) were first introduced in New York in 1890s to detect communicable diseases such as tuberculosis and diphtheria. These centers are leaders in providing primary care for children and youth. SBHC services are normally provided by nurse practitioners or physician assistants, although a physician is available by phone who visits weekly for on-site consultation.

Cigarette smoking and inhaled drug use among Virginia high school students

Article Abstract:

There is a progressive increase in smoking in adolescence singling increased risk for health problems, premature death, lung cancer and related respiratory diseases. If smoking is not established as a daily routine by age 20, the potential for initiating smoking drops significantly. Using the transtheoretical model in guiding smoking cessation

Article Abstract:

James O. Prochaska and Carlo C. DiClemente developed the transtheoretical model, which represents a motivational readiness continuum of changes in unhealthy behaviors. The model is a series of stages in preparation for changing the unhealthy behavior, particularly smoking. The model views relapse as a normal part of the change cycle. The article lists each stage.
