Funds of opportunity

Article Abstract:

From April 1993 General Practitioner (GP) fundholding will include responsibility for community health services. Community nurses should make GPs aware of their potential contribution to primary health care. Fund holding practices are absorbing many functions formerly carried out by hospitals. Therefore, demand for community nurses is likely to increase. GP fundholders assess their own staffing requirements. Community nurses should take the opportunity of establishing their positions as indispensable members of the primary health care team.

Getting to know you

Article Abstract:

UK health service professionals are seeking to imporve the service offered to mentally ill patients by encouraging greater collaboration between practice nurses and community psychiatric nursing (CPN) departments. Workshops have been established to allow each professional to gain a greater level of understanding as to how work is carried out in each field and the skills required to deliver the service. CPN professionals discovered the high level of involvement practice nurses have with mentally ill which they encounter on a daily basis.

Finding the limits

Article Abstract:

It is very difficult to define the extent of the services which district nurses should provide for elderly people dependent on their care, as the definition of social and health care needs varies from patient to patient. Health and social care cannot be separated using a task-based approach, and factors such as other sources of help available to the patient and the patient's own physical limitations need to be considered when defining extra care activities. The role of nursing auxiliaries is also considered.
