GWU-Universal deal cleared despite lingering concerns

Article Abstract:

The last obstacle to the pending partnership between George Washington University Hospital and Universal Health Services Inc of King of Prussia, PA, has been hurdled after two years of negotiation. Universal Health was the third for-profit healthcare company which has shown interest in the purchase of the hospital. Many physicians in the Washington, DC, area where the university is located were not in favor of the acquisition.

Hospital finds new buyer: medical staff concerns prompt new affiliation

Article Abstract:

George Washington University Hospital, prompted by increasing instability within its medical staff, has agreed to sell Universal Health Services Inc an 80% stake in the facility for $125 million. The deal is expected to give the hospital access to needed renovation funds. The collapse of a deal under which OrNda Health Corp would have bought the hospital left the its medical staff in a position of uncertainty.

Calif. merger expected to usher in new environment

Article Abstract:

The medical centers of Stanford University and the University of California at San Francisco merged to form UCSF Stanford Health Care effective Nov 1, 1997. Physicians expect dramatic impact from plans including coordination of services for specific diseases, procedures and patient populations. The newly merged centers plan to provide certain services, such as coronary bypass surgery, at fixed prices.
