Gastrointestinal tract: Part 1: Form and function

Article Abstract:

The human gastrointestinal (GI) tract, or alimentary system is a single tube approximately nine meters long when relaxed, though shorter in life because of the tone of the muscles within it. The basic four-layered structure is found throughout the GI tract, though different parts are adapted for different functions and sphincters and valves ensure that food usually moves in one direction only and help to separate the different parts of the canal.
