Outsourcing clinical trials to India rash and risky, critics warn

Article Abstract:

Contract research organizations (CROs) are mushrooming across India as American companies are acquiring Indian CROs and turning them into hubs of their clinical research activities as the trials can get done faster and at a cheaper cost. However, William Rutter, the chairman of Chiron Corporation criticizes that although such research provides a big opportunity, India's business model for information technology may not work here.

Institutional changes may mean more resources for Indian scientists

Article Abstract:

The new department within the Indian health ministry has promised to provide more funds and autonomy for medical researchers and encourage international collaborations. The new Department of Health Research would be overseeing the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and it is planning to have funds about five times higher than ICMR's current budget, which is $58.50 million for 2007-2008.

Newly expanded European Union faces growing pains

The EU could see some of the best bio-medical research brain leaving for better opportunities. Investor grants and wages are low in most of the new member states, in spite of research quality matching high European standards.
