Gene project leader 'devastated' by fraud scandal

Article Abstract:

National Center for Human Genome Research director Francis S. Collins called the discovery that one of the center's researchers had presented fraudulent data 'devastating.' In a lecture presented at the American Medical Assn's headquarters, Collins acknowledge that he was speaking in part to reassure the public and physicans of the center's integrity. His primary purpose was to generate support for an effort to develop policies concerning the ethical, cultural, and educational issues surrounding genetic medicine.

Officials and legislators in three states have begun arguments over how to utilize tobacco industry payments. Topics under debate include whether the money should be used strictly for health care issues or become a revenue source for any state need, and whether it should remain in state treasuries or be placed in trust funds with the interest subsidizing other health programs.
