Gene therapy program expanded

Article Abstract:

Genzyme General Div augmented its efforts in the development of gene therapy products indicated for occlusive vascular diseases through an agreement with scientists at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center in Boston, MA, and with Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD. Genzyme hopes to develop and market products that would prevent the recurrence of blocked arteries. The products would be of great help to 13 million Americans who are reportedly suffering from coronary artery disease.

LYMErix found safe and effective for disease prevention

Article Abstract:

The Vaccine and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommended the LYMErix, a bacterial vaccine indicated for Lyme disease, after it was found to be safe and effective in clinical trials. The vaccine promises to prevent Lyme disease which has emerged as a leading infectious disease. The administration of the vaccine would block the development of life-threatening complications such as heart block and myocarditis.

Tolerization therapy for treating diseases caused by undesirable immune response

Article Abstract:

Researcher Yaron Ilan has delivered a presentation to the World Congress of Gastroenterology in Vienna, Austria, that focused on the development of an approach designed to treat undesirable immune responses. The presentation detailed Ilan's research on making animals immunologically tolerant to certain virus vectors. It also discussed the induction of immunological tolerance to colon-derived proteins to minimize colonic inflammatory immune response.
