Genotypic resistance and immunologic outcomes among HIV-1 infected women with viral failure

Article Abstract:

The prevalence of specific protease inhibitor (PI) and nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) resistance mutations is described along with the relationship between the presence of these mutations and immunologic outcomes following PI/NNRTI initiation among a cohort of HIV-1--infected women. The results proved virologic failure associated with PI or NNRTI, as preserved CD4(super +) T-cell count responses was noticed alongside viremia with these resistance mutations.

The prognostic importance of changes in CD4+ cell count and HIV-1 RNA level in women after initiating highly active antiretroviral therapy

Article Abstract:

The prognostic value for clinical outcomes of CD4+ cell counts and HIV-1 RNA levels attained after initiating therapy was studied. Mortality and AIDS related morbidity after highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) initiation were predicted only by the values attained after initiating HAART and by the presence of an AIDS defining illness before HAART initiation.

Increased circulating interleukin-7 levels in HIV-1 infected women

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze the sex-based differences in CD4 T-cell (CD4) counts, which might be due to interleukin (IL) -7 essential for normal T-cell production and homeostasis. The results showed that circulating IL-7 levels were higher in HIV-1 infected women than in men, that might contribute to higher CD4 counts in women.
