Get attitude

Article Abstract:

Nurses are increasingly concerned with violence in the workplace and are looking for self-defence courses. There are many to choose from and some hospitals bring in trainers to run courses. However, it is important that techniques are relevant to the nursing situation so using an internal trainer is often more useful. Nurses are more interested in calming techniques than disabling ones. Personal safety techniques are taught to Project 2000 students at Middlesex University. Making the working environment safer may be a more useful approach to take.

Survivor's story

Article Abstract:

Jill Saward has been asked to speak to the medical profession about her experiences as a rape victim. Saward, who was raped in 1986, hopes to help nurses understand the ongoing effect of rape for the victims. It can be traumatic for victims to receive medical care, especially during childbirth. During 1995 there were 51,000 rapes reported in the United Kingdom; the need for more information for the nursing profession is vital. Saward has tried to use her experiences to help other victims through her writing and public speaking.
