Getting good reception

Article Abstract:

The article discusses research on the ligand-gated ion channels, which are pores in cell membranes that allow signals to be sent and received by neurotransmitters. Topics include experiments on the effect of nicotine on neurotransmission, and the importance of such research in gauging the effects of environmental pollution on the brain.

A yeast screen system for aromatase inhibitors and ligands for androgen receptor: yeast cells transformed with aromatase and androgen receptor

Article Abstract:

A yeast screen system is presented that does not require radioactive substrate, but allows accurate identification of new ligands and aromatase inhibitors for androgen receptors. The method also permits nonandrogenic aromatase inhibitors to be distinguished from androgenically active inhibitors.

Allergy receptor pictured

Article Abstract:

Researchers at Northwestern University and Harvard Medical School uncover the shape of immunoglobin E (IgE), the antibody responsible for common allergies. The ability to model IgE may assist in discovering allergy medication that can prevent allergies before they occur.
