Getting up to speed

Article Abstract:

Physicians can access a wide variety of medical databases and communicate with other physicians by using the Internet. Over 90% of academic physicians and about 20% of community physicians have used the Internet. However, learning how to access information can be daunting. Medline, MedNet and HealthOnline are among the many providers of medical databases and electronic mail systems which can be accessed on the Internet. Access to the Internet is available for free through academic or corporate institutions or for a fee by using commercial vendors.

Interactive videos: new system walks patients through treatment decision, lessening liability, saving time - and maybe money

Article Abstract:

Interactive videodiscs allow patients to learn about non-emergency medical problems in order to make informed treatment decisions. The discs also save physician time and ensure that a patient has been thoroughly informed about treatment benefits and risks. The programs, on illnesses such as prostate enlargement and breast cancer, are individually tailored to the patient's particular medical history. They include recurrence and mortality statistics and interviews with patients who have chosen different courses of treatment.
