Glasgow: working together to make a healthier city

Article Abstract:

Glasgow, Scotland joined the European Healthy Cities project in 1988. It has since changed from a grimy industrial city to an acclaimed city of European culture. The city had many unhealthy people but through the project, it took a new approach to health care that has corrected much of the problem.

Promoting health where the people are

Article Abstract:

The WHO's 1986 Ottawa Charter outlined policies for global health promotion focusing on the settings for health such as healthy cities, healthy villages, healthy marketplaces, and healthy islands. Health promotion must aim at developing individual potentials, and maintaining a healthy environment.

A healthy city is a better city

Article Abstract:

Urbanization is a global phenomenon. Often the poor of the slums are responsible for their own basic services and at the same time they suffer from the social breakdown associated with urban poverty. The WHO Healthy Cities Program seeks to make governments prioritize urban health issues.
