Separating wheat from chaff of nutrition information

Article Abstract:

Science reporters heard the most recent nutritional recommendations during a conference sponsored by the American Heart Association (AHA). Nutritional recommendations often change when new research highlights previously unknown health links to diet. The AHA's 1996 Dietary Guidelines for Healthy American Adults focused on evaluating an entire week's diet rather than a daily diet. Also, the association began to emphasize exercise and reduction of total calories as a way of reducing the risk of obesity. Previously, the emphasis was on reducing dietary fat alone. This has been successful, as fat makes up 34% of the average diet, down from 40% to 45% in 1957.

JCAHO, NCQA, and AMAP establish council to coordinate health care performance measurement

Article Abstract:

Three organizations that accredit health care facilities and physicians are joining forces to help standardize data collection and eliminate unnecessary duplication. The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) and the American Medical Accreditation Program (AMAP) will meet 3 or 4 times a year, beginning in the summer of 1998. AMAP is a program of the American Medical Association, which wants to create a national accrediting program for physicians.
