Glove allergies: research and practice update

Article Abstract:

There is now considerable awareness among health professionals in the UK about problems relating to allergies to latex used in gloves. The RCN's Society of Occupational Health plans to undertake in 1996 a survey of health care workers to assess how many people with a latex allergy are working in UK hospitals. It is hoped that this work will also establish common characteristics of people with this allergy, their glove-wearing habits and how the condition is managed.

Practical management of infant food allergies

Article Abstract:

The causes, diagnosis and management of infant food allergies are examined, and a practical, evidence-based, best-practice guidance is provided. Cow's milk allergy is most common among infants and in such cases, the most common alternative is a soy-based formula, and dietary advice from a paediatric dietitian should be sought to ensure that optimal intakes of essential nutrients such as calcium, magnesium and vitamins are maintained.

Alert to allergies

Article Abstract:

People who suffer atopic eczema in childhood could suffer from asthma or rhinitis as adults. There are environmental and genetic causes of susceptibility to allergies, from which 15% of people suffer. When both parents suffer allergies, their children have a 60% risk of suffering an allergy, and there is 30% risk for a child with one allergic parent. Suffering could be reduced if knowledge of allergens were increased.
