A recent report, entitled 'In a Different Light: School Nurses and Their Role in Meeting the Needs of School-Age Children', calls for the school nurse's role to be expanded. When school nurses do health talks on issues such as drug abuse and sexual health, conduct individual interviews or put together a profile of the general health in a school there are clear benefits. Children suffering from depression, deep anxietes, or speech and medical problems are noticed and can be treated. Employing extra staff to assist the nurse is cost-effective.

The UK government is seeking to improve the standard of food offered in hospitals. This initiative includes appointing celebrity chef Loyd Grossman as hospital food tsar.
